Equity In Sustainability: Providence
Together with the City of Providence, Environmental Justice League of Rhode Island, and Groundwork Providence we are working to bring a racial equity lens to the City's sustainability work.
This initiative, funded by the Funders' Network for Smart Growth with a match from the Rhode Island Foundation, began with the creation of a Racial and Environmental Justice Committee (REJC). Our team, a combination of nonprofit experts, community leaders, and city officials, worked to identify key concerns, issues and needs and provide recommendations for a long-term process and structure for ensuring that all communities, regardless of heritage or race, are equitably represented by the Office of Sustainability.
We also hosted two Undoing Racism trainings with the People's Institute for Survival and Beyond as a first step in bring start the process of reaching a shared definition and analysis of personal and institutional racism, so that we can begin to dismantle it.
