Next week, I'm going to Ile a Vache, a small island off the south coast of Haiti! Apparently, CNN named it 57 on its list of "100 most beautiful beaches in the world." (Picture from Caribjournal.com). There are beautiful beaches, and it is separate from the mainland of Haiti, so it makes sense that it should be developed for tourists to boost a failing economy... But does that make sense to the people who live there? I'm looking forward to finding out!
I'm excited to meet the residents. We (meaning me and some other volunteers & staff from Elevate Destinations, a partner on this project) will be on the island for 10 days (some more, some less), working with youth in entrepreneurship and leadership skills, art and English language, and a bit of water quality. I'm hoping to find out what other assets and resources the community has, beyond the beautiful beaches. What can they call on to enhance the quality of life and health of the local environment? What might the residents want to see in their local area, and how do they envision getting there.
Anyway, I'm sure I will learn a lot. But I have so much to do before I go... which is where the sore arm comes in. I needed some booster shots before traveling. There are plenty of other things on my to-do before I travel list, but I can cross off "pre-trip blog post."
If you would like to support our work in general or projects in Haiti in particular, I hope you'll consider making a donation. I'm donating my time and my plane ticket, and I promise to bring back pictures & stories. We're hoping to raise at least $500 for the ongoing leadership work we will do with youth on island. If you could donate $20 it would help a great deal!
