We are proud to announce that the One Square World team was selected to support The City of Providence, Groundwork Providence and the Environmental Justice League of Rhode Island to bring an equity lens to the City’s Sustainability Plan. 1SW is joined by Linnean Solutions, Emersion Design, Oredola Consulting, Consensus Building Institute and The People’s Institute for Survival and Beyond.
The project will begin to address and remedy deep-rooted environmental inequalities along racial and socioeconomic lines. Though low-income communities and communities of color are most vulnerable to climate change and environmental hazards, they often have the fewest opportunities to influence decision-making processes. Over the next year, we will work with project partners, decision-makers, and the community to ensure that social and racial equity is a part of the City's sustainability agenda.
The first steps will be to support the evaluation of the Sustainable Providence plan with a social and racial equity lens, engage stakeholders and residents to co-create a process to ensure equity is an ongoing priority in the city’s sustainability agenda, and conduct social and racial equity trainings for local government staff, community members, and other stakeholders.
We are excited to share in creating a sustainable future with the people of Providence. Keep up to date on the project at onesquareworld.org, and learn more about what the City of Providence is doing to achieve sustainability here.
